The upcoming housing lottery has us thinking about the history of the dorms. One thing we’ve learned: According to Miss Olive Davis, the director of residence in Shafer Hall when it opened, there were three major differences between Pomeroy (1904)/ Cazenove (1905) and Beebe (1908)/Shafer (1909). The dining rooms in Beebe and Shafer were 18 inches taller, they had elevators, and “the location of the drawing room on the first floor, instead of the second, is an advantage at once apparent to anyone who has administered the social life of a college home.” (From Wellesley College 1875-1975: A Century of Women.) After graduating from Barnard, Tobias won a scholarship to study biology at Wellesley in 1931, an appointment that included marine laboratory research at Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
